How Did I Start Yoga?

I am a certificated yoga teacher since 2016 and I want to tell you about my passion towards yoga. Yoga Alliance is an international organization and they have certificate programs and you can join these programs all around the world. I completed mine in Istanbul. You have to take some basic yoga classes in a certain time and you receive a certificate of teaching in the end.

However my yoga journey had already began long time ago. I went to India in 2008. It was my first year in college, and I wanted to do something different. I stumbled across an advertisement of AIESEC on the internet. I applied to be volunteer and I was selected for a project about street children in India. It was my very first trip, and I was all by myself. I wanted to go back home at the first week, but I didn’t give up. In the end, I had the best experience in my life.

And that’s where I met yoga. We were doing projects with the kids. In exchange for my volunteer training, they started to give me yoga lessons. I was more advantageous because I had a ballet background. That’s how I started doing yoga first and this beginning brought me until today. When I returned to Turkey, I started to practice yoga in my gym. And later on I even got my training certificate.

Always focus on yourself!

If you want to do yoga, the first thing you should know that this is your journey. Yoga aims to calm and balance the mind with practice. So always focus on your practice. It’s very important to listen to your body and yourself. As much as you practice yoga, it will be easier to overcome problems in daily life. I can say that yoga will change your perspective in life. It is also good for your muscles.  Sometimes it’s hard to do it, but I feel very good when I’m on a yoga mat.

Heal your mind…

Yoga has some principles. One of them is no violence. If your body does not want to do it at the moment, do not force and deceive yourself. At first, I thought I’d get tired of yoga, but then I realized that I don’t have this quiet time in my life. I realized that it was good for me and it was healing my mind. The intention is very important. First, determine your intention and then start practicing. Because today’s decisions affect the future. I hope this article can be useful for those who want to do yoga or think about it.
